We take for granted how much Earth does for us. I mean, it is literally the reason for our existence.
It is important to give back and be proactive in doing things for the Earth’s benefit, to not contribute as much to the things that are destroying it.
Climate change is real and it is happening right now. There is so much we can do, but if you don’t know where to begin, then there are 5 things you can do, simply, to help your planet, starting today!
1 – Recycle
It is crazy to think that things that can be used are just thrown into a bin that will be buried underground to sit and damage the environment even more. Things that can so easily be cleaned, reused, or made into something else for the process to continue.
Obviously not everything can be, but even just recycling the smallest things can have so many benefits. The energy saved from just 1 glass bottle is enough power to light a bulb for four hours, and for every ton of paper recycled, 17 trees are saved (you know, the things that literally give us the air we breathe!). Just think – next time you are going to throw something away – can it be used again?
2 – Share a lift
Why not take a public ride, or catch a lift with a friend instead? Did you know that 25% of cars can cause up to 90% of the air pollution that we breathe every day, especially in urban areas. Is it worth it just for one trip? There is public transport (debatable around London), and there is ways of being smart with how you travel. Why not do your part and share a ride from a friend. Plus, it saves a bit of petrol money.
3 – Turn it off
Perhaps the easiest way to contribute is by removing unnecessary electrical items from sockets. If it doesn’t need to be on, turn it off! Not only does it save money, but energy too. Plugs in the UK have on and off switches, but if this isn’t the case then removing the appliance altogether will save electricity being transmitted. We have become so used to the luxury of electricity that we think it is just going to come along with no care in the world, but why waste it when you don’t need to?
4 – Change your mindset
It is so easy to think that by not contributing to helping the environment, if just by a small amount, it won’t really hurt that much. But think of all the times you make this excuse and it starts to become so unimportant in your routine. Change the way you think about the world and what you are using and your actions – your actions do have consequences. Whether small or large, it is an impact. It isn’t hard to change a few things in your daily routine – the world needs your help and small steps are better than none!
5 – Tell a friend
Most importantly, if all else fails, tell a friend today! Let them know what they can do to help too. If they have something that can be reused or recycled, let them know. If you can pick them up on the way to save them a journey, do it too. Thinking smartly is so contagious. It isn’t “uncool” or “embarrassing”, it is as simple as “that can be used again” or “turn the plug off”. If you promote the positive mindset of helping Earth, other people will follow.
