21 things I’ve learnt in 21 years

A couple of weeks ago I turned 21 – yay! I wasn’t very happy to leave my teen years behind (twenteen and all that) but I am fully embracing my twenties. 21 is a big milestone and achievement, and for most a symbol of official adulthood so, naturally, you can imagine a lot of reflection occurred!

As someone who tends to look back and “reminisce” (so cheesy but true), I actually realised how much I’ve changed, particularly in the last year or so, and how much has happened and what I’d tell my younger self if I could. Before I go into that side, however, I wanted to share the “life lessons” that I’ve learned over these last 21 years, and maybe they will help others, but also a great way for my future self to look back and remember how far I’ve come!

So, here ya have it, the 21 things I’ve learnt!

1- It’s ok to be yourself and to be comfortable in your own skin. It will take time, but don’t force it. Embrace yourself, everyday.

2- There is no rush to get older! Be present and enjoy now.

3- Never be a people-pleaser – there is a difference being nice and seeking approval from everyone. Your true friends will not expect you to. Anyway, who cares what people think?!

4- Home is where-ever you make it. It is not one place but many little places, both far and wide, that you feel comfortable, safe and happy.

5-  Life is so fragile, but you are strong too. And those that are gone are never really that far away anyway.

6- Big groups of friends are soooo overrated. And you’ll lose friends, but you don’t need a lot of people who don’t give a shit. Surround yourself with people who do care and they will make everyday feel worthwhile.

7- Your weight is not anyone else’s issue but your own. Ignore the comments, but look after your body and don’t binge eat to make yourself feel better about being small. You have been made the way you were supposed to be made, and just fine the way you are.

8- Spending your life worrying is a waste of a life. Looking into the past solves nothing. Worrying about the future solves nothing. Live in the moment, life is too bloody short.

9- Family is the most important part of your life – look after those relationships and build upon them.

10- Intelligence comes in different forms. Just because you aren’t good at one thing doesn’t make you ‘dumb’. Intelligence comes from work ethic and a passion to learn. If you have that, you can do anything.

11- Making mistakes doesn’t make you bad or a terrible person. You are allowed to make mistakes and you must allow room to grow as it is the consequences that help you to learn for next time. Plus, don’t ever dwell on them. Someone has always done something worse!

12- You are capable of self-love and you are capable of loving others.

13- Materialism will not help you when you’re sad, you are filling an empty pit and will make you feel worse. Find happiness in yourself first (then treat yourself afterwards😉).

14- Looking after your body and your mind is the most important part of your life. Work hard, be inspired, but also think of how you treat yourself too.

15- Never force love, because it will come naturally. And it is the best feeling in the world.

16- Drink as much water as physically possible – your body will thank you for it.

17- Your mind is so powerful, in both good and bad ways. Water the best, most positive elements of your brain and allow them to grow, and in turn that will help the negative, depressing, anxious elements feel a little bit calmer too.

18- It is not necessary to worry or be scared to not know what you want to do or be, or where you fit in in the world. Work hard, the rest will follow.

19- Don’t ignore your heart, beliefs or values, because these things will creep up with you no matter how hard you try to ignore them. Embrace your inner thoughts, and hold on to the things you truly support and believe in, particularly when it comes to ethics & spirituality.

20- Life is full of some of the darkest demons you could possibly face. But also it is home to the most beautiful things you could imagine. Chose where you place your attention carefully, and remember that sometimes you have to have darkness to appreciate the light.

21- What’s meant to be, will always be. Have faith in yourself and your path.

#2 was my favorite because when we’re younger we can’t wait to grow up! We think not having to listen to our parents and do whatever we want, drink, go clubbing, is the best things in the world to look forward too. We just didn’t realize bills, stress, heartache etc would come into play.

Thank you! So true. And then reality hits and you just want to run to your parents!!! Haha
